three minutes changed my life forever
THIS IS MY STORY,
THREE MINUTES CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER. THIS IS WHY I CREATED “DON’T TAKE CHANCE’S”
Love for every person who deserves access to honest, balanced, evidence-informed information before making decisions that could change their lives forever.
My mission isn't to tell people what choices they should make.
My mission is to make sure those choices are informed.
I believe people deserve to understand not only the potential benefits of psychedelics, but also the very real psychological risks, the warning signs of a developing crisis, and the situations where immediate intervention can save a life.
I also know what happens after the crisis.
Families are left with trauma.
Partners are left asking impossible questions.
Children lose parents.
Parents lose children.
Friends lose the people they love.
Many survivors feel isolated because no one truly understands what happened to them.
I want this website to be a place where those people find information, compassion, understanding, and hope.
If you've experienced something similar, I want you to know that your story matters.
If you've lost someone, you're not alone.
If you're trying to understand what happened to someone you love, I hope this website gives you knowledge that helps make sense of the unimaginable.
If sharing Chance's story prevents even one family from experiencing what ours has endured, then his life—and his legacy—will continue to make a difference.
Thank you for being here.
Thank you for listening.
And thank you for helping me turn the worst day of my life into something that may one day save someone else's.
With gratitude,
Kelly Stevenson
Founder, Don't Take Chances
If our story gives someone three minutes to recognize the warning signs and get help, then Chance's legacy lives on.
About Me
If you had asked me a few years ago what I thought my future would look like, I would have told you it was finally coming together.
After finding our way back to each other years later, Chance and I were finally building the life we had both waited so long for. We were planning our future, talking about marriage, creating a home, raising our family, and dreaming about growing old together.
Then, in three minutes, everything changed.
On May 2, 2026, Chance experienced a sudden and catastrophic mental health crisis after using psilocybin mushrooms. The man I knew—the kind, loving, funny, protective partner I had spent years building a life with—was suddenly gone. I watched someone I loved become terrified, confused, and completely disconnected from reality in a way I never knew was possible.
Within minutes, I was performing CPR on the person I loved most.
Those moments will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I have replayed every second thousands of times. I questioned every decision. I searched endlessly for answers that no one seemed able to give. I spent countless hours reading medical literature, speaking with professionals, reviewing reports, and trying to understand how something so devastating could happen so quickly.
What I discovered surprised me.
There is incredible research exploring the potential therapeutic benefits of psychedelics. But there are also documented cases of severe psychological reactions, acute psychosis, panic, paranoia, hallucinations, and tragic outcomes that receive very little public attention. Families often don't know these risks exist until they are living through them.
I don't believe people should have to learn these lessons the way I did.
That is why I created Don't Take Chances.
This website was not built from anger.
It was built from love.
Love for Chance.
Love for my family.
